My name is Mariah and I’m interested in using data analytics to help the community and improve the world.

Currently I work at the University of Chicago Crime Lab where my team and I collaborate with the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to help analyze patrol data and crime statistics. We work directly in the districts with officers, civilian analysts, and CPD command staff to help make data driven decisions and metrics. Through this experience, I’ve developed skills in Tableau, R Shiny, SQL and maybe more importantly flexibility and a tough determination.

I graduated with a masters of Public Policy, Data Analytics track, at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in May 2017 and through the policy program I developed skills in R, program evaluation, policy analysis and business processes and I hope to apply my skills to help communities and cities. I hope to use data story-telling to do this. It is the stories of the code enforcement officers, the non-profits who want to use open data, the city who uses sensors to track air quality for citizen health, and community partners that make citizens feel connected and willing to participate in their community. We can take data and not only turn it into a beautiful visualization of numbers and trends, but in a way that presents the truth so that everyone can understand and make their own informed decisions.
