Data Projects

Info-graphic of Shootings In Chicago, the idea was inspired by this Tableau Iron Quest entry.

This Sankey diagram below shows stolen vehicles and where they were recovered, made with Tableau. Due to the sensitivity of the data, the workbook itself can’t be shared but the idea is to help commanders of police districts understand where cars are recovered in case there are patterns that appear. It’s dynamic and highlights the path to each district on hover.

GDP and Life Expectancy by Continent

This project was completed in my exploring and visualizing data class. We were investigating GDP and change in life expectancy by continent using clustering to see which countries had similar changes over time.

The Gender Wage Gap

This project investigates the wage gap for males and females using the NSLY97 survey that follows a cohort of select individuals throughout their lives. This document walks through the data set, investigating multiple aspects of variables that affect wages, whether it be education or parents income.

Code Enforcement Report

For my capstone project, our team created an open source database and an automated monthly report in R for a council of municipalities. This report summarizes the violations and makes it easy for council members and municipality staff to see which violations impact their community.

Design and Policy: Data Physicalization

In the advocacy and policy world, it’s not hard to see that there is passion in the work. People willing to put it all on the line day in and day out for something that they care about. But, too often there is something missing. Lack of data or being unable to make a quantifiable case for funding, or whatever it may be, that is a hindrance for making as a significant impact as possible. Policy is shaped through information dissemination.[i] Therefore, as technology and the need for data continues to rapidly grow, ensuring individuals know how to access and utilize data is crucial for policy development. While the rapid growth of open data encourages innovation it can also create digital access and education challenges as information gaps become increasingly larger. People with access to technology continue to grow with the evolving field while those without access fall behind. See our full project and the blog here.
